Cautious Clay is the stage name of Cleveland, Ohio-born, New York-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Karpeh. Drawing from R&B, hip-hop, leftfield indie pop and jazz elements, Cautious Clay has made a name for himself for poetic and emotionally honest music that features his sophisticated songwriting, soulful vocals and cinematic sound. On the album "Karpeh", Cautious Clay explores his roots, ancestry and family history, exploring his past and present in search of a universal truth for his future. He has broken the album into three chapters: Part 1. The Past Explained / Part 2. The Honeymoon Of Exploration / Part 3. A Bitter & Sweet Solitude. Part 1: "My early life in Ohio and my family's experiences are the cornerstones of what has shaped me for better or worse. Themes of unwavering self-confidence, the 'tides' of balancing family and work, race, and cultural identity run through this section." / Part 2: "Turning away from my past/family members before me, embracing vices, personal satisfaction and deep self-reflection - various forms of intimacy, psychedelic drugs and togetherness are an important part of this section." / Part 3: "I am learning how to be alone with my 'thoughts' to be the healthiest version of myself when I am with friends, family, etc. No matter where I go in life, being alone is a beautiful and eternal truth. There are themes of greed, death, and speaking for myself/my own needs. While this section lacks lyrical content, sonically it oscillates between harder / aggressive and softer / softer sound components."
