The gods of Greece may have been more powerful than the worms that built their temples, but they were not immune to human impulses. Jealousy, in particular, often confused them - as Johann Sigismund Kusser showed around 1700 at the Stuttgart court when he whirled the "divine" opera heroes around: Cupid shoots wildly, whereupon Apollo pursues Daphne and Venus burns for Adonis, but nothing pleases him more than the lively chase - until finally an arrow hardened by Vulcan penetrates and he succumbs to the goddess of love. She weakens his aim, and so a wild boar takes him on its tusks For a long time, this delicious, lively opera was thought to have been lost. in 2005, however, it was tracked down and resurrected by an Australian scholar in the Württemberg State Library, enabling Jörg Halubek and il Gusto Barocco to record it as another jewel in our baroque opera catalog.
