Popis
In September 1991 Dire Straits entered the US album charts for the last time with a new studio album. The band's sixth and (as it turned out) final studio release, On Every Street, was released on September 9 and debuted at #1 in the UK survey. The LP came a full six years and four months after their record-breaking multi-million seller of 1985, Brothers In Arms, and was followed by an exhaustive world tour. It was this grueling itinerary that made Mark Knopfler realize once and for all that the world of stadium shows, huge arenas and massive touring entourages and gear was no longer the one he wanted to live in. As we know, Dire Straits never made an official statement announcing their split, but a strong hint had come with his 1990 splinter group, the Notting Hillbillies, and their album Missing...Presumed Having A Good Time. in 1995, Knopfler devoted himself to his work outside of Dire Straits, finally releasing his first solo studio album, Golden Heart, a year later, not based on a soundtrack. On Every Street doesn't match any fan's idea of the perfect final chapter in Straits history. But it did produce a number of memorable songs, most notably the lead single "Calling Elvis," one of many demonstrations of Mark's always nimble rock guitar lead lines. Three more singles from the album followed with the characteristically rocking "Heavy Fuel," the thoughtful title track and the rock 'n' roll-heavy "The Bug." Other lesser-known gems include the understated "Fade To Black" and "You And Your Friend." The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK charts the week before its release in the U.S., replacing Paul Young's singles collection From Time To Time at the top. The Dire Straits album spent another four weeks in the UK Top 10 and a total of 27 in its first run on the chart, eventually growing to a total of 36. Just ten days after its debut in the band's home country, the album went double platinum there. In the States, it climbed to #12 and became another million-seller in Dire Straits history. From the original master tapes: This hybrid SACD presents the 1991 album with cinematic sound and transparent clarity Dire Straits never made much of a fuss about their latest run. In classic British understatement, the band let their music speak for itself. And how. Originally released in September 1991, "On Every Street" became the group's swan song - a testament to the influence, musicianship and integrity of an ensemble whose merits were never tarnished by money-grabbing reunions or farewell tours. The platinum record also comes full circle, as it returns Dire Straits to quartet form; the group stands refreshingly outside the prevailing trends of the era; and leader Mark Knopfler and company bang out song after song with the deceptive ease of a player downing a pint in a pub. This combination of subtle cool, clever composure and innate control dominate "On Every Street." Sourced from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's Hybrid SACD collection presents the album as it was always meant to be experienced: in premium reference-quality sound. Recorded at AIR Studios in London, the album features all of the band's sonic hallmarks - wide separation, visceral textures, seemingly boundless air, wide soundstages, atmospheres you can almost grab and feel. Each of these elements becomes more vivid, more physical on this reissue, showcasing Knopfler's sculpted guitar lines, expressive tones and relaxed vocals - as well as the balanced accompaniment by his bandmates. This is the version where you can hear the blossoming and fading of each note and imagine the size and shape of the studio. Open-minded in its approaches and oblivious to commercial expectations, "On Every Street" deserves nothing.
