Saariaho: Adriana Mater (2CD)

Adriana Mater, Kaija Saariaho's award-winning second opera, was recorded at Davies Symphony Hall in June 2023, just days after the composer's untimely death. In its review, the New York Times wrote: "Saariaho's tenderly consoling music looks at the worst in the world and says: The only way forward is grace". Conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and staged by Peter Sellars, the world premiere was recorded with the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus as well as soloists Fleur Barron, Axelle Fanyo, Nicholas Phan and Christopher Purves. At the 67th GRAMMY Awards ceremony in Los Angeles in February 2025, Kaija Saariaho's Adriana Mater was named Best Opera Recording - Deutsche Grammophon is now releasing the celebrated work on CD for the first time.
