Lea Desandre's solo debut album on Erato is based on works of Baroque music written specifically about the Amazons, that mythical warrior nation. Amazone explores in 26 varied tracks - including many world premiere recordings - how composers of the time musically portrayed the character of the Amazons. At issue are fascinatingly complex figures who embody a male-female duality. The ambiguity of gender plays a role in numerous operatic plots and provides an inexhaustible source of dramatic and musical inspiration. The album Amazone was recorded with the top young ensemble Jupiter, conducted by Thomas Dunford. Also performing are three special guests, true stars in the world of Baroque music: Cecilia Bartoli and Véronique Gens each sing a duet with Lea Desandre. Together with Thomas Dunford, William Christie presents a work by Louis Couperin on the harpsichord.
