Popis
As the 50th anniversary celebrations of David Bowie's first big hit Space Oddity continue, the series of extraordinary Bowie releases continues spectacularly: following Spying Through A Keyhole, the Clareville Grove demos and the collection featuring the Mercury demos, Parlophone releases a sensational double 7-inch single, including Space Oddity in brand new mixes by longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti The Space Oddity 50th Anniversary double-single set comes in a boxed set with a two-sided poster featuring a print of the original Space Oddity print ad and a stage photo of David Bowie shot by Ray Stevenson at the London Palladium on Nov. 30, 1969, while performing at Save Rave '69 in front of an image of a NASA astronaut. The box also presents an info sheet and a print with an alternate photo from the session for the Space Oddity promo single by Jojanneke Claassen The cover of the original mono single is adorned by the rare UK promotional envelope, which - in addition to the label - contains the original Phillips logo, the rights to which were cleared especially for the 50th Anniversary release. The single itself was transferred from the original single analog master tape. The cover for the 2019 mixes by Tony Visconti has been given a new design, featuring a Ray Stevenson shot from the Save Rave '69 concert alternate to the poster First released on July 11, 1969 as a 7-inch single, Space Oddity was also the opener of David Bowie's second album David Bowie (which was re-released a few years later as "Space Oddity"). Originally inspired by Stanley Kubrick's cult film "2001: A Space Odyssey," the song gained great popularity when it was adopted as the unofficial anthem for Apollo 11's moon landing, the launch of which occurred five days after the single's release Over the past 50 years, Space Oddity has gone on a journey as endless as that of its main character, Major Tom. Originally written in 1968 and recorded as a demo, the song has taken on different guises: From its appearance in the film for the TV special "Love You Till Tuesday" in an early incarnation recorded with John "Hutch" Hutchinson, to the Italian version "Ragazzo solo, Ragazza sola" that won the special Ivor Novello Award for its originality in May 1970. The song was Bowie's first hit on both sides of the Atlantic (#5 in the UK in 1969, #15 in the US in 1973 and #1 in the UK again in 1975). In 2013, it accompanied the first video shoot in space, when Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield performed it aboard the International Space Station. For Bowie himself, Major Tom remained a motif that accompanied him throughout his career, appearing in the songs "Ashes To Ashes," "Hello Spaceboy" and in the video for "★" (Black Star).
