Tomasz Stańko Quintet: Music for K (Polish Jazz vol. 22)

With his first album as a leader, Tomasz Stańko continued in 1971 the ideas of Krzysztof Komeda, who died in 1969 in a grotesque accident. K, of course, refers to none other than Komeda, and this LP marked the beginning of Komeda's reception in Poland, which continues to this day. On saxophones are Komeda's companion Janusz Muniak and the later violin legend Zbigniew Seifert, who also died much too young. Bassist Bronisław Suchanek and drummer Janusz Stefański shortly thereafter formed pianist Miecyłsaw Kosz's rhythm section on "Reminiscence" (Polish Jazz Vol. 25) "Music For K" is rightly considered one of the most important documents of Polish free jazz, without therefore renouncing the poetry schooled in Slavic folklore.
