Valentin Silvestrov, Ukraine's most significant contemporary composer, reflects on his rich musical journey and the turmoil of exile in Berlin on the new recording Forgotten Word I Wished to Say. Celebrated with an OPUS Klassik award in 2022, Silvestrov's works resonate with the influences of Mozart, Schubert, and Mahler. Forgotten Word I Wished to Say, initiated by Silvestrov himself and featuring renowned Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov and Ukrainian soprano Viktoria Vitrenko, showcases compositions from the 1970s to 2023, including the poignant vocal cycle Stufen and Berlin-composed piano pieces. These works, steeped in nostalgia and romanticism, reveal Silvestrov's melodic genius and poetic power. Highlights include Lubimov's interpretation of Kitsch-Musik, a multi-part piano suite inspired by Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms, and Three Pieces dedicated to Silvestrov's late wife.
