"Laughin' to Keep from Cryin'" was recorded and released in 1958, just over a year before his death, and features saxophonist Lester Young on one of his last studio recordings. Although his tone had softened, Young's phrasing remains fluid and expressive, favoring subtlety over power. Produced by Norman Granz, this recording brings together trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison, whose opposing styles - fiery drive and relaxed, bluesy restraint - create a captivating musical contrast. Accompanied by Hank Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), George Duvivier (bass) and Mickey Sheen (drums), the session combines the swing of small ensembles with a polished studio feel.
