*Stirrings Still* was Samuel Beckett’s last work of prose. It was completed in 1987 and first published the following year. More of a monologue than a narrative, it is the text of a narrator on the threshold between life and what lies beyond—perhaps a vast, black-and-white wheat field, or perhaps a whirlpool of tentative memories. Beckett had a deep appreciation for music, particularly the songs and string quartets of Franz Schubert. His writing is musical—in its careful use of language, its employ of repetition, and often in its form as well. *Stirrings Still* is an example of this: a composition of interweavings and developments. The music, created specifically for this release by composer Trevor Bača, is not intended as an accompaniment but as a parallel stream of sound. Alternating with the words, it resonates, reflecting and contemplating what they have to say. Conceived for the extraordinary musicality of the JACK Quartet, this stream of sound draws listeners in again and again—not away from the words, but deeper into them through a different medium. *Stirrings Still* was recorded in 2023 and 2024 at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher, who has long been fascinated by the musicality inherent in the writings of Samuel Beckett .
