1745 was not a good year for Handel. By the time his musical season was two-thirds over, his finances were so bad that if he had continued, Handel would have been nearly bankrupt. Once again he had misjudged the needs of his musical audience: there was no longer any demand for the number of oratorio performances he had planned, and the result was that not only the composer's bank account but also his health was in a terrible state. Sixty-one-year-old Handel left London and retired to the countryside to recuperate, first to Exton Hall in Lancashire, the seat of the Earl of Gainsborough, and then to Scarborough
