Ludwig Spohr was one of the most important figures in the musical life of Germany in the first half of the 19th century. Among his most popular works were his symphonies, which in their day were heard in the concert hall on a par with those of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Howard Shelley, conducting the Orchestra, succeeds convincingly in bringing out the originality and individuality of Spohr's symphonies.
