Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) gained a legendary reputation as one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century, both with his performances and his improvisations. However, with very few exceptions, his piano compositions still seem to be overshadowed by comparable works by his contemporaries Schumann, Chopin or Liszt.
Howard Shelley's complete recording of the solo piano works, realized in the midst of a Mendelssohn renaissance, offers an opportunity to reassess his pianistic oeuvre in a new and unbiased way. The third set introduces both individual pieces and his only published sonata for piano.
