Sigrid: How to Let Go (LP)

When Sigrid started out, her style was minimalist: white T-shirt and jeans, the utilitarian uniform of the always-ready pop star. Somehow, over time, it became distorted, critics mistaking it for the product of a major label's marketing meeting. "I felt like I lost some of the ownership," she says. "There was so much talk about the white T-shirt and jeans, in every interview, on every poster, everything was so focused on that, and when we started this cycle, I was really frustrated and confused-it felt like it wasn't mine anymore In the end, however, I found out that it was mine. It came from me. I'm not going to let anyone else take ownership of it." It also led to a more existential realization. "I started to think if I'm a good role model if the only reason I dress the way I do is so people can't say anything about me trying to use my body to 'get to the top.' Would I be a better role model if I managed to protect my privacy but still not lie about being a woman? Yes, I like to feel good about myself while being a young female entrepreneur.... I think that's pretty rad." With this second album Sigrid has also realized that making music is healing for her: that it is everything she wants to do. The gigantic single "Mirror" is an anthem for her fans, but also a reminder to herself: that it starts with the person in the reflection. Soon these emotional songs, shuttling between dancefloor and quiet corners and steeped in reflection, upheaval and change, will be other people's anthems Then the emotional liberation can really begin.
