Elton John's 24th album was mostly recorded a year earlier, in the early months of 1994, just before the release of Elton's new songs with Sir Tim Rice for the Lion King soundtrack. When Made In England was released, the flamboyant frontman was 48 years old. "Believe," the album's Grammy-nominated lead single that preceded Made In England on Feb. 20, was a weighty ballad that became a Top 15 hit in both the U.K. and U.S., and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart in the U.S. and reached No. 1 in Italy. Made In England debuted at #3 on the UK charts on April 1, 1995 (and peaked there) and lasted for 14 weeks; it reached #13 in the US and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA just weeks after its May 1995 release.
