Released in May 1972, the album "Honky Château" made Elton John a superstar and ushered in a new era for him. Named after the residential studios outside Paris where the album was recorded, "Honky Château" brought a new level of simplicity and directness to Elton's music that had previously only been glimpsed. Without the complexity and ornate orchestrations of his recent works, "Honky Château" seemed freer and more intimate. These special editions include the original album, on both vinyl and CD, and a newly compiled selection of outtakes from the sessions, produced by Matt Still from the original tapes, highlighting the warmth and humor of the sessions. On CD only are eight tracks from the album, recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in 1972. The album has been compiled with the usual care by Elton's catalog team and comes in gatefold sleeve with an eight-page booklet featuring rare photos, memorabilia and an essay by co-curator and music writer Daryl Easlea. "Honky Château" was mastered at Lurssen in California, and the vinyl was cut at Abbey Road.
