The Hungaro-American Gábor Szabó could rightly be called a true "scorcerer", that is, a magician or sorcerer. Not only because of his virtuosity on the guitar and his imaginative improvisations, but also because he knew how to transform pop songs into real jazz gems. He showed this particularly impressively in 1967 on "The Sorcerer," recorded live at the Boston Jazz Workshop. The repertoire reflected what was hip at the time: a bossa nova by Roberto Menescal, a Top 10 hit by Sonny & Cher and a piece by French film composer Francis Lai.
