Freddie Roach: Good Move (180g) (Tone Poet Vinyl) (LP)

The New York Hammond organist Freddie Roach (1931-1980) was still a fairly unknown quantity when the tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec brought him into his quartet in 1961, with whom he recorded two soul-jazzy albums for Blue Note. Producer Alfred Lion was so enthusiastic about Roach, who played with much more structure and shading than other organists at the time, that he immediately signed him to Blue Note. Between 1962 and 1965, Roach recorded five first-class soul-jazz albums for the label, among which the relaxed and easy swinging "Good Move!" from 1963 stood out in particular.
