The classic Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! contains two great band sessions that Ella Fitzgerald recorded with pianist Lou Levy, guitarist Herb Ellis and drummer Stan Levey, among others. In contrast to her songbook classics, which Ella sang for Verve, this recording from 1961 shows Ella Fitzgerald as most people experienced her live: with a swinging quartet. The program consists largely of repertoire from the swing and early bebop period, with Ella mixing soulful ballads with more upbeat pieces.
