Tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin (1930–1970) rose to prominence in the late 1950s through his collaboration with Charles Mingus. He was a distinctive soloist with a powerful tone and a phrasing style influenced by blues and gospel. One of his finest works as a bandleader was *Structurally Sound*, which he recorded in December 1966 with a quintet of dedicated modernists—including the young trumpeter Charles Tolliver—for the Pacific Jazz label. The album was recorded during one of his final recording sessions and stands as impressive evidence of how he had continued to develop his style in the years leading up to his far too early death.
