"Drives" was Lonnie Smith's fourth and, for the time being, last album for Blue Note in 1970. The Hammond organist would not celebrate his triumphant return to the label until 46 years later. With his quintet - featuring two saxophonists (baritone and tenor), a guitarist and a drummer - he really stepped on the gas once again on "Drives". The decidedly funky album became a prime example of the organist's adventurous spirit and irrepressible groove.
