Sonny Rollins was under contract with Blue Note for less than a year. But in this short time, he managed to record three excellent studio albums and a breathtaking live album for the label. His Blue Note debut, recorded in December 1956 with the simple title "Volume 1", was a classic Rollins hard bop album. The repertoire consisted of four lesser-known compositions by the tenor saxophonist, in which he nevertheless shone with his usual breathtaking solos. And as so often, Sonny surprised with an unconventional interpretation of a Broadway musical number.
