Because in the course of his career, which spanned seven decades, Dizzy Gillespie almost always showed himself to be a musician "bubbling over" with the joy of playing. With his permanent quintet and the congalero Carlos "Patato" Valdes as a guest, Dizzy went into the studio in February 1959 to record "The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie" for Verve, a particularly lively album characterized by groovy jazz, Latin American and African influences and the trumpeter's typical mischievous humour.
