Although she had already recorded an album with pianist Ray Bryant's trio in 1955 (on which she was only heard on half of the songs), "Out There!" from 1958 is considered Betty Carter's actual debut album.
Backed by a first-class band under the direction of alto saxophonist and arranger Gigi Gryce, she shows here what a great bebopper she was in a program consisting of jazz standards but also including her first own composition.
