Julia Hülsmann Quartet: Under The Surface

Julia Hülsmann's quartet reappears with a fresh Norwegian horn section in tow, presenting a series of attractive originals in which the group thoughtfully and adventurously explores common ground. As in previous performances, each member of the quartet contributes music to the session, with the leader herself responsible for half of the program. The introduction of saxophonist Uli Kempendorff to Julia's trio on "Not Far From Here" (2019) already brought a new dimension to the group's interplay - this feeling is enhanced and expanded by the addition of Norwegian trumpeter Hildegunn Øiseth, who joins the quartet on trumpet and articulate goat horn for five tracks. Captivating lyricism and playful rhythmic and melodic interaction run through "Under The Surface" - a jewel in Julia Hülsmann's increasingly impressive ECM oeuvre.
