With his soulful, swinging hard bop style, trumpeter Blue Mitchell embodied the Blue Note ethos like few other musicians in the second half of the 1960s. "The Thing To Do", recorded in 1964, was the first album Mitchell released on the label in 1965 (his actual debut album "Step Lightly", recorded in 1963, was not released until 1980 despite its top line-up). "The Thing To Do" is historically significant simply because the album features two young musicians who achieved world fame a few years later with Miles Davis' jazz-rock band: pianist Chick Corea and drummer Al Foster. The repertoire of the album, which achieved the highest rating of five stars on AllMusic, ranges from hard bop to ballads and a calypso-influenced piece.
