No other tenor saxophonist embodied the hard bop sound of the late 1950s and 1960s as much as Hank Mobley. With his confident, blues-influenced sound, warm tone and smooth improvisations, Mobley, who was part of the original Jazz Messengers line-up, secured his place in jazz history with albums like this one from 1957. On "Hank Mobley", the then 26-year-old can be heard with a sextet consisting of a powerful three-piece brass frontline and a first-class rhythm section. The varied program includes two standards and three original compositions by Mobley and his saxophone colleague Curtis Porter (also known as Shafi Hadi), who was part of Charles Mingus' band at the time.
