Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson quickly became a fixture on the Blue Note scene after performing as a sideman alongside Thelonious Monk and Milt Jackson in 1952. That same year, he began recording his own sessions as a bandleader, and by the time he returned to Van Gelder Studio in 1960 to record his outstanding album *Sunny Side Up*, he already had a dozen recording sessions under his own name to his credit. In many ways, the album is a prime example of the classic Blue Note hard bop sound: a mix of swinging standards and blues-infused original compositions, interpreted with great feeling and expression by a quintet.
