Popis
"Volumes" is a new archive series of live shows, demos, unreleased recordings and other previously unseen material showcasing the many eras and facets of the band. "Volumes: One - Selections From Music Concerts 2019-2023 Bon Iver 6 Piece Band" is the first installment and brings together 10 performances that show Bon Iver at their wildest, warmest and most powerful.
"These 10 songs are kind of like, 'Here, if you've never heard Bon Iver before, or if you've heard it and didn't like it, this might be for you.' This is what we've become. This is really our best. This is it," says Justin Vernon, who began work on "Volumes: One" in 2020, sifting through dozens of hours of live recordings to compile the ultimate track list.
"Volumes: One - Selections From Music Concerts 2019-2023 Bon Iver 6 Piece Band" is Bon Iver's first non-studio album, but it's more than just a compilation or live album. Band members Andrew Fitzpatrick, Jenn Wasner, Justin Vernon, Matthew McCaughan, Michael Lewis and Sean Carey are a unit in their own right. Together, they deliver the definitive versions of these songs for newcomers and die-hard fans alike, exploding the tracks in their richest form through the essential live engineering of Xandy Whitesel.
Recorded between 2019 and 2023, when Bon Iver performed their final live concert to date, 'Volumes: One' highlights the music from 2016's '22, A Million' and 2019's 'i,i', complemented by three key tracks. The COVID anthem "P.D.L.I.F." represents a new phase of Bon Iver; a cover of Mahalia Jackson's "A Satisfied Mind" recalls the early days of DeYarmond Edison, when Vernon discovered his falsetto during private band rehearsals; and now, finally, "Heavenly Father," a fan favorite, returns.
The heady, introverted and innovative side of Bon Iver that defines the studio albums can't exist without the live band, and "Volumes: One" is like a time capsule - a prismatic look at an old friend, showing who they were and who they are, all the good they're capable of but perhaps sometimes too shy to show.
