The publication of a facsimile edition of the complete works of Napoléon Coste in the 1980s brought the name of the composer and guitarist back into the public consciousness after decades of neglect. The Sor pupil was the most important French guitarist of the 19th century and a creative innovator. The Fantaisie symphonique, with its quasi-orchestral textures, rapid changes of mood, and virtuosic flourishes, demonstrates the range of his ambitions. Le Départ is one of his most popular extended pieces, full of fluid transitions. The other works show the diversity of his art - the variety of techniques used, the mastery of texture, and the attractive complexity.
