The beginning of 1763 saw the end of a conflict that could well be described as a "world war" according to the ideas of the time, as it had raged not only throughout Europe but also in parts of the New World. After seven years, the battle lines had been drawn and the people who had had to bear the brunt of it all could breathe a sigh of relief for a while. The Lüneburg church musician Johann Christoph Schmügel wrote the extensive Peace Cantata on the occasion of a thanksgiving feast for the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, which is now being performed for the first time after its premiere on January 6, 1763. Schmügel was one of his best composition students, according to Georg Philipp Telemann, who is also represented here with some musical commentaries on the military events: war and peace are close together.
