Genesis: We Can't Dance (2LP)

A small portion of depth returned to the music of Genesis, which had given way to a concentration on crisp hits on previous albums. We Can't Dance also had these to offer: I Can't Dance of course, one of the most popular Genesis songs ever, as well as singles like No Son Of Mine, Jesus He Knows Me and Tell Me Why. Rocky riffs were paired with unusually bold and unpolished sounds, while there was still enough room for the soft, balladic moments that Phil Collins had perfected over the years. Last but not least, Since I Lost You, which was written for Eric Clapton's late son, is a special song. Most music critics agreed that We Can't Dance was Genesis' strongest musical statement in over ten years, without sacrificing the hit-making flair that had seen them dominate the charts on previous records. A 2024 vinyl reissue of the underrated Genesis album from 1991 featuring the epics "Driving The Last Spike" and "Fading Lights", the exquisite "Hold On My Heart" and the emotional "No Son Of Mine".
