Born in Dublin in 1966, Sinead O'Connor has certainly become one of the most controversial and influential female pop stars of the last decade. She has always seen herself primarily as an artist and has always gone against the stereotypical categorization of female stars (including as sex symbols), and has done so so consistently that she has not always made friends. For example, she became the most reviled artist in conservative America when she tore up a picture of the Pope on television and refused to perform at a concert in New Jersey because the American national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" had just been played. Before that, she sang in support of the IRA in her native Ireland and was actually always very inflammatory. She is undoubtedly one of the female pop stars who have earned their combat boots. But her fans certainly like this non-conformist attitude, which is impressively documented by the fact that this - her second - album has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. The cover version of the Prince song "Nothing Compares 2 U", which marked their breakthrough, made this moving, very passionate album full of dark beauty and desire famous. The album was voted "Second Best Album Of The Year" by the NME.
