The Who’s rock opera *Quadrophenia*, released as a double album in 1973, is a conceptual work set against the backdrop of the 1960s Mod movement, where the band began its career in West London. The main character, Jimmy, is a disillusioned teenager who hates his parents and his menial job, but finds escape from the drudgery among his Mod peers by popping pills and riding his scooter to weekend concerts by bands like The Who. But the freedom he finds turns out to be illusory. The album’s title is derived from the personalities of the four members of The Who, who are meant to represent the four sides of Jimmy. Townshend has called the album the best music he has ever written. In 1979, it was adapted into a film directed by Franc Roddam (featuring a young Sting in a key role) and was performed live by The Who, sometimes with guest musicians.
