Meshell Ndegeocello: Synonym

With “Synonym,” Meshell Ndegeocello presents her third album for Blue Note, this time radically reimagining well-known songs. The Grammy-winning bassist, singer, songwriter, and producer has been one of the most influential artists spanning soul, jazz, funk, rock, hip-hop, and avant-garde for over three decades. Rather than simply interpreting classics, she transforms songs spanning six decades of pop history into a unique musical universe. Each track is conceived as a duet. Together with guests such as Cynthia Erivo, Chaka Khan, Cat Power, Robert Glasper, Brandi Carlile, Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney, WILLOW, and ANOHNI, she creates intense reinterpretations of love, longing, pain, and self-determination. Produced with David Gamson and Abe Rounds, “Synonym” is far more than a cover album: it’s a tribute to great songs and a powerful statement about the unifying power of music.
