Shimmering colours, intoxicating sounds: The Sound of Debussy on vinyl for the 100th anniversary of his death There are few composers who are actually instantly recognisable by their sound. Claude Debussy, whose 100th death anniversary is in March 2018, is one of them. He was one of the first to discover sound itself as a means of musical formation. Where others broke new ground with harmonies, melodies or rhythms, he succeeded with his very own "sound", which would later go down in history as Impressionism. The LP Impressions - The Sound of Debussy gathers the most significant examples in groundbreaking recordings. If any musical genre is predestined for the high sonic demands of the 180g vinyl, it is Debussy's Impressionism. His music resembles an endless stream of consciousness in glowing colours, and these shine downright iridescent in the legendary recordings of the Debussy specialists under the conductors Jean Martinon, Jean-Francois Paillard and Carlo Maria Giulini. The first LP side is dedicated to piano works - with the absolute Debussy hit Claire de Lune (Moonlight) with Cecile Ousset, who leads an illustrious line-up of pianists, also consisting of Michel Beroff, Samson Francois, Yuri Egorov and Debussy himself, who is represented with a rare piano role recording.
