Buxtehude: Trio Sonatas Opus 2

Around the mid-1690s Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707), in his advanced years, published two collections of sonatas in the fantastic style, which are now considered summit works of German instrumental music in the second half of the 17th century. Stylus Phantasticus was understood to mean music with an almost improvisatory character, characterized by delightful unpredictability, effective virtuosity and marked expressivity. Following their recording of the Sonatas op. 1 (jpc 7401223), the musicians of Arcangelo (Sophie Gent, Jonathan Manson, Thomas Dunford and Jonathan Cohen) here present Buxtehude's no less fascinating Sonatas op. 2.
