Cherubini: Requiem in c (SACD)

Cherubini's Requiem in c, composed in Paris in 1816, achieved immense fame and popularity within a short time. Musicians such as Beethoven, at whose funeral it was performed, Schumann and Brahms held the work in the highest esteem. The occasion for its composition was a memorial service for Louis XVI, who had been executed in 1793 as a victim of the French Revolution. The work, scored for mixed choir and large orchestra, dispenses with solo voices and substitutes virtuoso-concertante effects for a strongly textual internalization, which is optimally brought out by the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Hofkapelle Stuttgart under Frieder Bernius.
