Past and modernity
Bryan Ferry is back with a new album in 2018. "Bitter-Sweet" is the 16th solo work by the British singer and songwriter and Roxy Music founding member, the successor to "Avonmore" from 2014.
Like his album "The Jazz Age" (2012), "Bitter-Sweet" was created together with the Bryan Ferry Orchestra. It was also heavily inspired by Ferry's work on the soundtrack to the German historical crime series "Babylon Berlin", which is set in the 1920s.
This is why "Bitter-Sweet" also features musical styles from this period, including ragtime, blues and jazz. In addition to Ferry's solo songs, well-known Roxy Music classics such as "While My Heart Is Still Beating", "Sign Of The Times", "Bitter Sweet", "Limbo" and "Dance Away" are also performed.
Unlike "The Jazz Age", "Bitter-Sweet" contains a total of eight vocal tracks alongside instrumental pieces.
A jazz album with cover songs from their own catalog, modern and past under one hat. Rarely has this been as successful as on Bryan Ferry's "Bitter-Sweet".
Inspired by the shady cabarets and smoky jazz clubs of Weimar Berlin in the late 1920s, Bryan Ferry and his orchestra present his solo and Roxy Music repertoire in a new guise on "Bitter-Sweet" - with a refined jazz sensibility. The album captivates with elegant brass arrangements, muted trumpet, clarinet sounds and an atmosphere of urban melancholy that reinterprets classics such as "Alphaville", "Reason or Rhyme" and "While My Heart Is Still Beating". Ferry himself contributes vocals on eight tracks, while the remaining pieces are presented as instrumental reinterpretations, arranged with the skill of Colin Good and played by an ensemble of experienced jazz musicians. The concept for the album grew out of Ferry's work as music consultant for the acclaimed German television series "Babylon Berlin", in which some tracks were originally used, combining cinematic drama with authentic jazz. Perfect for longtime fans, jazz lovers and collectors, "Bitter-Sweet" offers a new perspective on Ferry's songwriting, making it an outstanding album to display, discover and give as a gift.
The album will be released as a limited edition red LP and CD.
