For the first time, Daniel Barenboim devoted a concert to Franz Liszt's two highly virtuosic piano concertos. On the podium of Barenboim's own orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, was his longtime friend and esteemed colleague Pierre Boulez, and on their joint European tour they were showered with praise everywhere. In the opinion of both musicians, Liszt was one of the most important pioneers of musical modernism, not only as a composer, but also as a pianist and conductor. Liszt influenced many of his revolutionary contemporaries such as Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner, and two magnificent orchestral works by the latter composer rounded out the program of this celebratory concert marking Liszt's 200th birthday.
