Popis
Grammy-nominated Canadian ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD present the latest edition of Mr Bongo's iconic "Brazil 45 box set series". The Toronto-based band, consisting of Alexander Sowinski, Chester Hansen and Leland Whitty, have made a name for themselves by fusing different genres and developing a distinctive blend of jazz, hip-hop and psychedelic grooves. Her rise to the top of the scene has led to collaborations with icons such as Tyler, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, MF Doom, Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands) and Ghostface Killah. With a penchant for catchy hooks, their sound draws influences from around the world, both past and present, not least from the wealth of music that has emanated from Brazil over the last 70 years. As beatmakers, musicians and record collectors, the influence of Brazilian music on BADBADNOTGOOD's productions is unmistakable. Their former collaborators include Arthur Verocai and Tim Bernardes. So it made sense to hand over the reins to them for the next edition of our signature box set series. As always, the brief was simple: compile a selection of your favorite Brazilian tracks from the country's rich musical tapestry. Living out their love of Brazilian music from the 60s to the present day, BADBADNOTGOOD's selection works like a mixtape, taking the listener on a journey through time and genres. Starting with contemporary tracks from "O Terno" and her sublime, bouncy, string-heavy number "Tudo Que Eu Não Fiz" to Chico Bernardes' soulful, slow simmering folk track "Até Que Enfim". The modern anthem mood-lifter "Tropical Man" by Menahan Street Band and Rogê feels like a timeless, funky Brazilian classic, and Dora Morelenbaum of Bala Desejo is at her most serene and ethereal on "Vento de Beirada". There is also a deep excavation into lost Brazilian treasures. Opening with a wonderfully haunting psych-folk obscurity from Naire's 1974 self-titled album, there's Guilherme Coutinho and Grupo Stalo's genre-bending trippy-pop anomaly 'Rio Corrente', reminiscent of subsequent bands such as Stereolab and Belle & Sebastian. There's also a much-loved classic by Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca, "Transamazonica", side by side with a dose of bossa jazz by Som / 3 from 1966. The box set concludes with the most profound and experimental selection of Sebastião Tapajo and Pedro dos Santos' quirky guitar and percussion piece "Despedida de Mangueira" from 1972, joined by a heroine of the keys and Brazilian underground music great, musician and singer Ana Mazzotti and her piece "Agora Ou Nunca Mais". A captivating collection of coveted tracks that span genres, decades and tempos, giving an insight into the eclectic tastes of BADBADNOTGOOD as they continue to explore the richness of Brazilian music history. Record Store Day 2025 release. 5x unique 45s 12" in a limited edition clamshell box.
