Enrico Rava & Fred Hersch: The Song Is You (LP)

Their collaboration is already being hailed as a summit meeting of two masters of jazz. Enrico Rava, trumpeter from Trieste, and Fred Hersch, pianist from Cincinnati, share a deep attachment to tradition and a keen sense of melodic innovation. On this recording, featuring flugelhorn and piano in the magnificent acoustics of Lugano's Auditorio Stelio Molo, Rava and Hersch explore some highly regarded standards: Jerome Kern's "The Song Is You," Thelonious Monk's "Mysterioso" and "'Round Midnight," Jobim's "Retrato em Branco e Preto," and George Bassman's "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." They also play their own pieces, Fred's "Child's Song" and Enrico's "The Trial," and also improvise freely with each other. Enrico Rava has been recording with ECM for nearly fifty years - "The Song Is You" is Fred Hersch's first recording for the label. The album was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in November 2021 and produced by Manfred Eicher.
