Borodin's life was under the constant tension of combining the very divergent spheres of the composer's life with those of a highly respected chemist. Due to his scientific ambition, music took such a backseat that his compositions almost always owe their creation to periods of illness. Borodin's extraordinary esteem among his fellow composers is evident not least in the large number of arrangements and orchestrations they made of his music.
