Mitski: Puberty 2

If you ask Mitski Miyawaki about happiness, she simply warns: "Happiness f***s you". This lesson has been part of the New Yorker's dark outsider indie sound for years, but has never been applied as powerfully as on her latest album "Puberty 2". "Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one is almost more destructive than the other," she says. "When you realize you can't have one without the other, it's possible to spend periods of happiness waiting for the counter-wave." On "Puberty 2," that tension is palpable: a hinterland both beautiful and brutally romantic, where one of America's new voices is forging a bold new path.
