Following their critically acclaimed recording of Johann Gottfried Müthel's piano concertos (BIS-2179), the Polish ensemble Arte dei Suonatori and Marcin Świątkiewicz, who conducts from the instrument, perform the six Hamburg symphonies by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, interspersed with solo fantasies for piano. The music of C. P. E. Bach has always fascinated listeners thanks to its great variety of moods, captivating melodic ideas, irresistible contrasts, surprising interweaving of voices, eccentric harmonies and extreme dynamic transitions. The six symphonies presented here are no exception and demonstrate a truly "subversive" musical style expressed in extreme contrasts. Due to the wealth of ideas, the virtuosity and the sharpness of the compositional work, these works are regarded as the crowning glory of C. P. E. Bach's oeuvre. As these symphonies can be regarded as intimate chamber music, they are performed here by a compact ensemble in which each musician participates equally in the interpretation and everyone is heard. Thanks to the historically informed performance practice pursued here, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Hamburg symphonies and fantasies regain their original effect, which inspires awe and moves hearts.
