This album marks the sixth and final in a series of Respighi's works that BBC Music Magazine has called "one of the best surveys of Respighi's orchestral works ever published by only one conductor." To this day, the immense popularity of his "Roman Trilogy" overshadows many other works, including arrangements of Renaissance and Baroque music. This is a pity, because this is exciting music. On the one hand, it is a testimony to his love of "early music," but on the other hand, these are less music-historical reconstructions than "free transcriptions for orchestra," as he himself called them. The four suites recorded here, originally for harpsichord or lute, are excellent examples of this.
