The last years of Schubert's life were overshadowed by illness, and so the thought of the "hereafter", a life after death, must have been a frequent companion of the composer.
On their latest recital, Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton present Schubert songs about the "Elysium", the mythical idea of a blessed and happy eternal future, with texts depicting various stages of eternal life, not only from the pens of well-known poets such as Goethe, Rückert and Schiller.
The recording is part of a steadily growing series of concept albums by the two artists, with "A Soprano's Schubertiade" being named "Recording of the Month" by MusicWeb International and "CD Tip" by BR Klassik.
