Korngold: Sinfonietta Op.5 (SACD)

Although the three composers on this recording are not among the most important representatives of Viennese music in the first half of the 20th century in the public perception and sometimes even in the perception of the performers, their remarkably expressive and virtuoso work is deeply rooted in fin-de-siècle Vienna. They were banned by the dictatorships of the 1930s and blacklisted by the young European avant-garde after the Second World War, and it is only in recent years that the beauty and opulence of their works have been rediscovered. The Vienna-born conductor Sascha Goetzel writes about the works performed here with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire: "With Korngold, Schreker and Krenek, we are not simply listening to music - we are entering into a dialog between past and present, tradition and rebellion, myth and modernity [...] Korngold embodies the emotional sincerity and creative ambition of the late Romantic tradition. Schreker delves into the subconscious - mythical, volatile and rich in emotion. Krenek breaks through the façade by introducing irony, jazz and fragmentation into the orchestral form [...] Each composer pushes against traditional conventions in his own way in order to discover new tonal languages."
