The brains behind the Steely Dan band project, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, were known for scaring their studio musicians out of the recording room with merciless criticism. Guitarist Dean Parks described their style as "one step beyond perfection". Arrangements were refined to absolute perfection - only for the recording to be destroyed at the end and re-recorded so that the looseness was not lost. In addition to the brilliant music, this will to perfection is one of the reasons why "Aja" was an integral part of hi-fi presentations in the 1970s and 1980s. The recording team led by renowned sound engineer Roger Nichols consisted of greats from the audio industry: Bill Schnee, Al Schmitt and Elliot Scheiner.
