The wife of a duke has resisted the advances of a powerful lecher and is set adrift at sea "as punishment". The shipwrecked woman is rescued by a well-meaning ore mine manager, who keeps her for ten years under a different name as his niece. Finally, the duke, widowed for the second time, returns to the place of exile. They find each other again, the villain is due ... Nothing new, you might think. But the one-act play L'inganno felice ("The successful deception"), which premiered in Venice at the beginning of 1812, is so full of the most fiery Rossini that we forget the usual story during the almost 11/2-hour performance: It ignites and sparks, sparkles and whirls in the most beautiful melodies, the most sparkling rhythms and the most furious "orchestral rolls" of which the master of the barber was capable. Not only the festival was thrilled!
